ACCOMODATION

The cheapest option

If you don’t have much money, particularly if you’re a student, the cheapest option by far is the CROUS – the organism in charge of student accommodation in France. A single room in a student hall of residence costs about 15 euros per night if you’re a student (you need to provide proof of your status) and about 30 if you’re not.
Information and contact details are available on their website: http://www.crous-reims.fr/logement/maison-des-etudiants/
If you prefer, you can also contact me (elise.louviot@univ-reims.fr) and I’ll forward your request for accommodation directly to the right person (if you can’t write French, this might be the easiest option).

Reasonably priced hotels (from about 60 to 100 euros per night)

Two-star hotels
* Comte de Champagne http://www.comtesdechampagne.com
A rather quaint hotel, located in 16th century town houses, very central location.
* L'Arlequin www.hotelarlequin.com/
Simple and modern, considered pretty good value by most customers.

Three-star hotels
* Le Royal http://www.royal-hotel-troyes.com
Slightly old-fashioned, but there’s a nice restaurant in the hotel, which can be convenient. Very close to the train station.
* L'hôtel de la gare http://www.hoteldelagaretroyes.com/
Simple and modern, usually considered good value. Very close to the train station.

Very nice hotels (from about 140 to 200 euros per night)

Four-star hotels
* Clarion Collection Hotel Saint Jean http://www.hotel-relais-saint-jean.com
Very fancy hotel with all the modern comfort, but located in a charming town house in a very central location.
* Le champs des oiseaux http://www.champdesoiseaux.com/
Very charming hotel, close to the cathedral, located in a beautifully restored medieval house. There is a nice restaurant in the hotel, though it is only opened from Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Five-star hotel
* La Maison de Rhodes http://www.maisonderhodes.com/
A former possession of the Order of Malta, the beautiful medieval building is now a very nice hotel, with a swimming pool and a medieval garden. Le champs des oiseaux and La Maison de Rhodes belong to the same owner and share the same restaurant.

TRAVEL

By car
Troyes is served by the motorways A5 / E54 (Paris – Troyes – Langres; from Langres A31 then A6 to Lyons via Dijon) and A26 / E17 (Calais – Reims – Troyes).

By train
Your best option is to get to Troyes from Paris Est, though it is also possible to get there from a number of smaller cities (Vesoul, Belfort, Culmont…). Trains from Moscow, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich, Warsaw, Innsbruck and Luxembourg all arrive at Paris Est.
Paris Est station is also located very close to Paris Nord (the station from which Eurostar and Thalys trains depart, among others), which is potentially convenient : you can easily walk from Paris Nord to Paris Est in 10 minutes or you can take the tube (one stop, line 4 or 5).

By plane
There is a local airport not too far from Troyes (“Paris-Vatry”), but unless you live in a very sunny place (Malaga, Ajaccio, Nice…) chances are you won’t find a plane to get there. Your best chance is probably a flight to Paris and then a train from there (see above).
Both Orly and Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airports are served by local RER trains (line B: the blue line): for Roissy it’s direct from the Airport to Gare du Nord (which is very close to Gare de l’Est, see “by train” above) and for Orly you need to take the Orlyval tramway to Antony station so you can catch the RER to Gare du Nord or you can take the tramway T7 and then catch the metro line 7 at Villejuif-Aragon, which will take you directly to Gare de l’Est.
You can also rent a car at the airport and take the motorway A5 to Troyes.
Flights with RyanAir usually land at Beauvais Airport, which is significantly further away from Paris than Roissy or Orly, so perhaps not the best option if you intend to rent a car. However, there is a shuttle service from the airport to the train station in Beauvais and from there you can get a train to Paris-Nord.
